Syracuse, NY, 6/10-6/11- Greenwich Central High School running star Nina
Sgambelluri won the Division 2 1500M and 3000M races at the NYSPHSAA State
Track and Field Championships. Running huge personal records in both events, she ran
comfortably and confidently, pacing both races and ending with spectacular finishes. On
Friday night, Nina ran the 3000M race in 9:50.75. Less than a day later, she returned, on
Saturday, in the 1500M. Her time of 4:32.58 broke the fifteen year old Greenwich
school record of 4:35.98, held by Caitlin Lane. In the Federation standings (all schools,
large and small, public and private), Nina's performances earned medals for 3 rd place in
the 3000M and 8 th in the 1500M. The senior will be running for NCAA Division I
University of Delaware beginning in the fall cross country season.
Senior standout Deontae Bennett completed his school record setting season with solid
performances in the 100M, long jump and and high jump. His best performance was his
7 th place finish in the Division 2 long jump (21' 9”).
Prior to the state meet, junior thrower Keegan Collins had won the league and sectional
discus titles and had thrown 118' 2”. She was unable to match her best season throws in
Syracuse and finished eleventh in Division 2.
