Purpose
The purpose of the remedial math program is to provide students who are at risk of not meeting the New York State Learning Standards in Math with more teacher contact time to supplement and support the regular classroom program. Students receive additional instruction and have an opportunity to practice their skills with close supervision.
Selection for the Program
A variety of criteria are used to determine which students will be included in the program. These include teacher recommendation, New York State math test (given in grade 4) results, individually administered math assessments (the Key Math test) and the judgment of the remedial teacher if students have been in the program before.
Schedule
Students have contact with the remedial teacher from 1 to five times a week for 30 to 45 minutes a session. In many situations the additional teacher contact time takes place within the classroom setting where both the classroom and remedial teachers can work with individual students and/or small groups as needed. If this is not possible students come to the Study Center to work in small groups with the remedial teacher.
Evaluation
There is ongoing assessment of students progress and close monitoring of their classroom performance through review of their regular work and in meetings with the classroom teacher.
You will learn about your student's progress from a
written report that will be sent home with your
child's report card. The remedial teacher will
also meet with you when you come in for your parent
conference in November and at any other time you
request a conference. |
