Tips for Parents

Students who are at risk of not meeting the state standards for English/Language Arts receive extra support in these areas with special emphasis on reading and writing.    Recommendations from classroom teachers, scores on state tests, achievement test results and individual testing results are used to determine if students need this extra support.

Students receive assistance in the classroom or in small groups in the study center.  Classroom teachers communicate regularly with the remedial teachers so that the student's total program is coordinated.

Evaluation is on-going and includes close monitoring of students oral and silent reading skills.  Students receive instruction that assists them in becoming fluent readers and are taught a variety of silent reading comprehension strategies as well.  Students are encouraged to become thoughtful readers that can summarize what they read and use a variety of methods to helping themselves when they encounter difficulties with the material they are expected to read.  Writing is often used to assess students understanding of what they are reading as are discussions in the class.  Materials from many genre are used, such as realistic fiction, historical fiction, poetry, nonfiction including text material and materials used for research.  Quarterly reports that are included with the regular classroom report cards are sent to parents to keep them informed of student's progress.
