Course Requirements:
Attendance. You are
expected to attend
class. You must be
prepared to discuss the
reading or written
assignment as if you
were to teach the class.
Take notes on the
reading as if you were
discussing the authors
major points. Do not
copy the text; learn
what is important and
what is fluff.
Evaluation:
Homework: Homework
will be assigned on a
daily basis. This is due
at the beginning of each
period. NO EXCUSES! Any
late homework will
receive a maximum grade
of 75. You will be
required to stay after
school to make up any
missing assignments. You
will receive a 0 but are
still required to turn
in the assignment. If an
absence occurs all work
will be due the day you
return. Failure to do so
will result in a
referral and incomplete
for the assignment,
therefore an incomplete
for the course.
Exams: There will be
an exam at the end of
each unit. They will be
an hourly exam
consisting of a full
period. Only material
covered since the
beginning of each unit
will be covered. The
format will vary with
multiple choice, short
answer and essay
questions.
Quizzes: There
will be at least 2
quizzes per week
covering all material
covered in class. They
will be cumulative
quizzes covering all
material. At the end of
approximately each
2-week period a make up
quiz will be given which
you may use to replace
your lowest quiz grade
up to that point. This
will be a chance to make
up any quizzes missed
due to absence or other
reasons. This will be
available after school
only, and will be
offered once only no
exceptions.
Participation:
You are expected to
participate in class
activities. If you come
unprepared to class with
supplies or missing
homework as well as any
sort of disruption to
the class you will loose
1 point from your final
average as well as be
given a referral each
time this happens. This
will have a major impact
on your final average so
come prepared, behave
and you will do fine.
Articles: There will
be an article summary
due every week through
out the year. This is an
article from a credible
source such as Time or
Newsweek. This should
include an
1. Introduction
2. Summary- Brief
highlighting the major
points
3. Conclusion/opinion
and relation section
-This should be
approximately a minimum
1 page in length. The
majority of the grade
will be based on your
critical thinking. This
should include your
opinion (in depth) as
well as how it's
affecting the current
society.
-The article should
involve some aspect of
American society,
politics, government
etc.
-You are required to
attach a copy of the
article with your
written assignment.
-Each student is
required to hand in an
article summary each
week and you will have
to present your material
approximately 1 time per
month.
-You can check the
calendar on the wall to
see when your
presentation days are. I
will not remind you. You
need to be responsible
enough to check the
dates.
Essays: There will
be at least 1 essay type
assignment per week.
Essay writing is an
essential part of U.S.
History course
requirements. We will do
approximately 12-15
DBQ's as well as 12-15
thematic essays over the
year.
Projects: We will do
a few group and
individual projects over
the course. This will
vary and will be
determined as the year
moves on.
Note Books: Each
student is
required to have a 3
ring binder for the
course. This will need
to be broken into
sections based on
1. Notes
2. Tests/Quizzes
3. Essays/Written work
4. Articles Summaries
5. Other
Good organization is
essential for success in
the classroom.
Assistance: I
will do everything I can
to make sure this is an
enjoyable experience. It
will not be easy but
with hard work and focus
everyone will be
successful. The subject
requires a very close
reading of the written
materials. You will
probably need to read
the materials more than
once to understand to
concepts. Time spent
reading and preparing
will pay off in good
participation
