Jenna Brophy is a varsity tennis star, a
strong, committed student and an effervescent
personality; however, her most impressive accomplishment
may be what she has created for others.
Three years ago, as a 9th grade member of the
school tennis team, Jenna reflected on the lack of
developmental opportunities in tennis for young girls in
the Greenwich community. By her own initiative, she
decided to provide such an opportunity. She spoke with
her tennis coach, Mr. McGuirk, and school officials to
get permission to use the tennis courts. She set up a
schedule and advertised a new, free tennis clinic for
girls in grades 4-6. She arranged a ten-week calendar of
once-a-week, two-hour sessions. Three years later, the
clinic is still thriving. On a typical Saturday, Jenna
will have more than twenty “campers” on the tennis
courts and the spring of 2011 marked the third year of
lessons for some of the girls.
Jenna
has developed leadership skills far beyond those typical
of her age. She interacts seamlessly with children,
contemporaries and adults. Her organizational talents
are equally impressive as in her clinics, she cajoles
and schedules volunteers from the high school tennis
team to assist her. She designs and implements lessons
that progressively build upon skills. In addition to
all that she has given and provided to young girls in
the community, Jenna has gained insight into post-
secondary education and career goals. She loves
interacting with and helping people of all ages and has
decided to pursue occupational therapy.
This young coach also demonstrates character in her own,
competitive performance. Last year Jenna injured her
knee so severely that she required two surgeries. She
was unable to play tennis for nine months; but, she
continued to run her clinics throughout this painful
period of her life. This year, she returned to varsity
tennis and became the first Greenwich student to win the
Foothills Council 1st singles title. She has
taken private tennis lessons for three years and is a
member of the U.S. Tennis Association (USTA). She has
played indoor winter tournaments throughout high school
Jenna is enrolled in the GCS work
experience program, with Teacher of Business Brenda
Saunders. Jenna’s school mornings are spent rotating
between Helping Hands Physical Therapy, in Greenwich and
the elementary school, where she works with Occupational
Therapist Jim Spears. When she returns to GCS, she hits
the books in challenging electives including Physics and
Algebra 2/Trigonometry.
Jenna
is also a volunteer for the GCS Yearbook and is working
on page designs. She works part-time, during the school
year and full-time, in the summers, at the Ice Cream
Mann, where she prepares and serves food.
Jenna’s career choice to work in a
helping profession, interacting with people, indicates
strong self-awareness. Her classmates also recognized
her friendly, caring nature when they elected her to
Prom Queen.
Jenna is the daughter of Peter and
Deborah Brophy, of Greenwich. Her brother, James Brophy
is a member of the Class of 2015.
