Mel is a fully
committed student and a major contributor in sports, activities,
arts and environmental concerns.
Mel loves learning and is consummately prepared for classes. Her
work and study habits are exemplary and she routinely seeks
challenges and exceeds even the lofty standards that teachers have
come to expect from her. She ranks second in the senior class, with
a 97.5 grade point average and has taken eight courses from the
category of Advanced Placement and University in High School
(through SUNY Albany). Through these courses, Mel has earned more
than one semester of college credits.
Mel
was a regular on the varsity field hockey team, which finished
18-2 in the 2010 season and did not bow out until the State
quarterfinals. She was on the basketball team for three years and
was a founding member of the lacrosse team at GCS. She has been the student council treasurer
and a three-year class president. Last year, she was named the
Regional YMCA Earth Service Award winner for her commitment to
environmental issues. When she became aware of the environmental
devastation of worldwide livestock farming (reportedly contributing
to 18% of greenhouse gas emissions- more than cars, trains, planes
and boats), Mel became a vegetarian. Another example of her personal
commitment to a cleaner environment includes her active involvement
in the Student Council’s yearly “Adopt A Highway” cleanup. Her
University in High Schools Science research was a study involving
amphibian life in PCB polluted environments. Both her personal
decisions and academic work have reflected Mel’s personal commitment to the environment.
In addition to her rigorous studies, Mel has
Mel in
Assisi, Italy maintained
her studies in art, which is not likely to
be a part of her
career future, but has provided a medium for self expression and
technical proficiency. She also performs in the school chorus, band
and in school musicals. Her musical instruments of choice include the oboe, guitar and piano.
Mel
Steinberg is an exceedingly rare person. She lives a passionate life
of study, wholesome activities and the arts. She is interested in
pursuing biological sciences and later on, medical school. Given her talents, achievement and lofty ideals, her
post-secondary school goals are most appropriate.
Mel is the daughter of Ellen Woodhouse and Daniel Pemrick of
Greenwich and David and Charlotte Steinberg, of Indianapolis,
Indiana. Mel has two brothers and two sisters: Rebecca Pemrick, Ruby
Pemrick (GCS ’21), Sam Steinberg (’08) and Ellis Pemrick (’18).
