In the fall of
2006, Cady first helped the GCS cross country team to a New York
State championship. Four years later, she stands at the threshold of
a fifth straight team title, a feat that would distinguish her among
all athletes in GCS history. Yet, Cady can hardly be defined in such
narrow terms. She is also a brilliant student, world traveler,
concert fan, aspiring humanitarian and a genuinely nice young
person.
With a senior
schedule that includes AP English, AP U.S. Government & Politics, AP
Statistics, AP Environmental Science and University Spanish (through
SUNY Albany), Cady’s time away from running is largely spoken for
with studies. And as in running, her results have been sterling. Her
grade point average of 95.3 ranks fifth in the senior class and her
SAT scores are equally impressive. High grades are the norm for
Cady, but her Regents test average of 99 in social studies is
particularly appropriate for her intended college major of history
or sociology. From a distance, it is easy to believe that for
students like Cady, “things just come easily.” The truth is that
Cady, like most über-achievers, has driven
herself for all she has achieved in school and sports.
In
a program that has produced five NCAA Division I runners in the last
four years, it is significant to note that Cady has the third
fastest Spa Park cross-country time in Greenwich history. In the
2009 cross-country season, she was named to the 1st Team,
Class D All-State team for the third straight year. Cady also holds
Greenwich track and field records in the 2000M Steeplechase (7:20.6)
and a share of the indoor and outdoor 3200M relays. Cady’s prowess
is certainly linked to talent, but that talent has been developed
through many years of year-round, directed practices often exceeding
fifty miles of running per week.
This year’s cross
country team began the season as the 2nd ranked Class C
team in New York State, but after winning their race at the
Manhattan Invitational, the Witches have moved to the top of the
rankings, so Cady’s chances of an unprecedented fifth State
Championship are realistic. Coach Steve Patrick notes that in
addition to Cady’s stellar running career, she has always been a
stabilizing force. “When elite athletes compete as a team and
against each other year-round, over several years, you can imagine
that there are sometimes tensions. Cady has always been a
peacemaker.”
In
free time- yes, there is a little time left for this- Cady loves
music and attending concerts. Her favored alternative bands include
“Cake,” “Modest Mouse” and “MGMT.” She also plays the trumpet in the
school band and enjoys playing acoustic and electric guitar.
Experiencing the world beyond Greenwich at running events throughout
the Northeast and in travel to countries including the Dominican
Republic, France and Ireland have contributed to Cady’s global
sensibilities. She was recently researching the genocide and widespread rape
Cady in Ireland
perpetrated by armed militias in
the
Congo and has
been brainstorming with student partners about a fund
raiser for a Congo relief organization.
Cady is considering
colleges and is interested in Hartwick, the University of Vermont,
SUNY Oneonta, the University of Rochester and Northeastern. One
thing is very certain: the workload and demands of college will be
nothing new to her.
Cady is the
daughter of Jen and Chris Kuzmich, of Greenwich. She has three
siblings: Cybill (Kipp) Gill (GCS ‘89 ), Josh Lee (’98) and Jesse
Lee (’01).
