Attend A Free College Financial Aid Workshop at HVCC
Hudson Valley Community College will be offering a Financial Aid Workshop at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, February 15 and on Thursday, March 15. If you bring your filed tax returns, you can receive assistance filing your FAFSA online in the second hour. For more information and to pre-register, click here.
 
The FAFSA Assistance Hotline
is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from noon - 5:00 pm through February 28. Seniors who are planning to attend college next year and their parents can get answers to questions about financial aid by calling the FAFSA Hotline at 1-800-808-179 or by emailing anytime (FAFSAhelp@hesc.org )

Eastbound Jesus Releases New CD at Putnam Den Show

GCS Alums David Wright, Luke Anderson, Dylan Robinson, Adam Brockway,
Carl Anderson and Zack Infante comprise the band Eastbound Jesus.

Saratoga Springs, NY, 1/27: The bluegrass band called Eastbound Jesus played to a packed house at the Putnam Den for the release of it's second CD, "Holy Smokes." Last June, EJ won the Saratoga Performing Arts Center Battle of the Bands in a competition featuring sixty-eight acts. According to Crumbs Blog on the Albany Times Union Newspaper website, EJ earned "...a professionally recorded EP at The Recording Company, a music video professionally produced by Modern Mix Studios, airplay on 102.7 WEQX, custom designed tee shirts and stickers with the band logo provided by Saratoga Statement and an opportunity to play a summer show at Putnam Den in Saratoga Springs as the SPAC Battle of the Bands 2011 Winner."

 Brophy Chosen as DAR Good Citizen
GREENWICH – Jenna Brophy, the daughter of Peter and Debbie Brophy of Greenwich, has been selected as the Greenwich Central School’s DAR Good Citizen, sponsored by the Willard’s Mountain Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Jenna was chosen by the school for this honor because she possesses the following qualities: Dependability – truthfulness, loyalty and punctuality; Service – cooperation, courtesy and consideration of others; Leadership – personality, self-control and ability to assume responsibility; and Patriotism – unselfish interest in family, school, community and nation.

 Jenna will also represent the Willard’s Mountain Chapter in the DAR National Scholarship Contest and has the potential to win further scholarships and awards.

GCS Inducts 2011-12 National Honor Society Members
Students were selected by the faculty for excelling in areas of academics, character, service, and leadership. They represent GCS as outstanding citizens and will take part in a multitude of community service endeavors for the betterment of both the school and community. Congratulations to GCS Girls Cross Country: Ranked Top Small Public School Team in the Nation. The National High School XC Coaches Association, which ranks high school teams, has two subcategories: Large Schools (400 plus students in grades 9-12) and Small Schools. GCS finished as the 3rd ranked small school in the nation and was 1st among small public high schools. Link:  http://www.xcnation.com/11theditionnationalrankings

Montague leads Cross Country team at Nike Cross National Regional Meet

11/26, Wappingers Falls, NY: Running her best race ever, Madeline Montague led the Witches to a 6th place finish in the New York State championship club race. Montague narrowly missed a sponsored berth in the Nike Cross Nationals, in Oregon. Greenwich ran behind the top three teams in the Nation in the race. Victoria Houser, Sarah Lapham, Tori Spiezio, Jackie Boyce and Annie Grimmke followed Montague for the WItches.

 

 

Congratulations to fall sports teams

The football team
was 5-2 in the regular season and lost in a hard-fought, thrilling contest against Watervliet in the Sectional playoffs.

The boys soccer team
won a second straight Wasaren League crown. Christopher Herbst was named Wasaren League Soccer MVP for the second straight year.

The boys cross-country team
was the Wasaren League dual meet co-champion. Austin Lane was the Wasaren League Champion for a sixth straight year and the Sectional Champion for a third straight time. Freshman Jeremy Spiezio was the League runner-up. Both boys have qualified for the State Meet.

The boys golf team had standout performances by Greg Scott (Wasaren League Champion) and Elliot Hansen, who qualified for the sectional tournament.

The girls soccer team
won an exciting, opening round sectional game, on the road, against St. Johnsville. 

The girls tennis team won the Maple Hill tournament and Jenna Brophy was the Foothills Conference singles champion.

The girls field hockey team won a third straight sectional title, beating Schuylerville 2-1. It was the first goal allowed by the Witches all season. Dani GeGregory has become the all-time Section 2 leader in both assists and goals. Good luck to the team in the State playoffs!

Girls XC Wins Ocean State Invitational, Ranked US #25
Warwick, RI - Victoria Houser won the individual championship at the Ocean State Invitational and was followed by Madeline Montague (5th), Sarah Lapham (9th), Tori Spiezio (17th) and Jackie Boyce (29th) to bring home the team title. The girls team is ranked 4th among all NY State teams and 25th in the United States  http://rise.espn.go.com/track-and-xc/rankings/harrier-xc/2011/Fall-2011.aspx?pursuit=TrackAndXC

Austin Lane was 5th among boys in the Championship race and Jeremy Spiezio broke the freshman course record in winning the freshman race.

Austin Lane Named Channel 13 WNYT Dunkin Donuts Athlete of the Week`
WNYT Sports Anchor Andrew Catalon Came to GCS and interviewed Austin about his running history, family and unprecedented march to a 6th straight individual Wasaren League cross country title. You can view the video here.

Curtis Lewsey (GCS '01) has co-authored the book Appreciation Marketing: How to Achieve Greatness Through Gratitude.

Curtis, a Sacred Heart University graduate, credits his GCS physical education teacher, baseball and basketball coach Duke Beck on the book's Acknowledgements page.

After a stellar academic and athletic career at GCS, Curtis went on to star for and captain the Sacred Heart Pioneers baseball team (NCAA DI).
