What is AIS?

Academic Intervention Services

1.)  WHAT IS AIS?

Academic Intervention Services are services required by New York State which provide additional instruction to students in English and/or mathematics based upon performance on required New York State assessments, classroom performance, and/or teacher recommendation.  Services are provided in two forms: scheduled AIS classes and progress monitoring.  AIS classes supplement the instruction provided in the general curriculum and assists students in meeting the State Learning Standards.  Progress monitoring involves the AIS teacher monitoring a student’s performance every five weeks to check on his/her progress in the respective academic class through contact with the content teacher.  If this form of service is not effective, then the student will be placed in an AIS class if his/her schedule allows.  Students will exit the program based on successful completion of New York State assessments.

2.)  WHAT HAPPENS IN AN AIS CLASS?

1.)   INDIVIDUALIZED INSTRUCTION - Students will receive individualized support in their identified areas requiring strengthening that align with the NYS standards.

2.)   TEST TAKING STRATEGIES - Students will learn test taking strategies to help them on multiple choice and extended response questions as seen on the 7th and  8th Grade NYS MATH Assessment, the 7th and 8th Grade NYS ELA Assessment, and  the high school MATH A Regents, and the 11th Grade English Regents.

3.)   CLASSROOM SUPPORT - In AIS MATH, students will receive additional math instruction in the math content they are currently working on in their math classroom and spiral reviews using methods such as flashcards, hands on activities, quiz and test reviews, homework help, and math games.  In AIS ELA, students will also receive additional English instruction in the English content they are currently working on in their English classroom using methods such as question of the day, quiz and test review, homework help, and skill building activities.

3.)  WHO ARE THE AIS TEACHERS?

The AIS teachers encourage you to contact them if you ever have any questions or concerns about your student or about the AIS program.
